Description: The purpose of high school chemistry is to help students understand the mechanisms of matter and chemical reactions.  Upon completion of the course, the student should have a clear understanding of the history of chemistry, explored the uses of chemistry in various careers, gained an ability to cope with chemical questions, and problems related to personal needs and social issues, and an understanding of laboratory safety.  To achieve these goals, about 20% of class time will be spent in the laboratory.

 

REQUIRED materials: Scientific Calculator (must have LOG key), Graph paper, Goggles, Pen or Pencil, Binder, Textbook

 

Grading: 

Exams                      40%    
Lab Reports/Quizzes   30%             
Homework                20%                                                                         
Class Participation     10%

 

          Exams:  Exams will be given every chapter with at least two days notice

Lab Reports:  One to three per chapter

Quizzes:  One to three per chapter

Homework:  Homework will be given virtually every day

Class participation/citizenship:  Students start with 100 points for each ten week grading period. Students lose points for, but not limited to, the following:

·       An unexcused tardy

·       Excessive/inappropriate talking

·       Lack of or inappropriate participation

·       Vandalizing school/fellow student's property

·       Coming to class unprepared

·       Leaving your seat without permission

·       Leaving a messy work area
