Course Outline: US History 1

Goal

Students will review American history from exploration to 1865 and promote an in-depth analysis of from 1865-1929 in order to acquire basic skills related to the development of a responsible citizen.  Through the exploration of topics such as the struggle for human rights, the diversity of races, as well as ideas and conflicts during the post Civil War era, students will develop a greater understanding of life in the United States. These concepts are essential to providing learners with the problem solving skills required for active participation in a 21st century democracy.  The curriculum will include many more important issues, policies, people and crisis through which students will gain understanding so that they may draw many of their own conclusions.

Materials Please bring the following every day unless told otherwise.

These textbooks are relatively new.  Students must have books covered at all times and must not place loose papers and handouts inside of book.  If the book is uncovered students must have their book covered by the next class session or will be given a detention to be served that afternoon.

Grading

Quarter grades will be based on the following and weighted accordingly

Preparation and Participation

It is expected that all students come to class prepared to learn.  This means that each individual must be prepared both physically and mentally for each class.  This class is not time to catch up on sleep or other classes.  Participation is mandatory and if necessary, students may receive a participation grade.

Note

I expect my students to show a certain degree of self-motivation..  We will be covering a large amount of material very thoroughly.  It is important that you are prepared to put in the maximum amount of effort so that the class may reach it’s potential.  You are all capable of doing well and I expect students to be focused in and out of class.

Additional Classroom Policies

Mr. Anderson

1.      All students are expected to arrive on time with all materials.  Students will not be able to leave class to get their homework, textbook, etc.  Students will receive detentions following their third tardy and each tardy thereafter.

  1. Homework is to be turned in the day it is due. Late homework will not be accepted.  In the event of an absence you will be required to turn work in the first day back from sickness.  Credit will not be received for late work or incomplete work.  It is recommended that students have a person with whom they are able to check/get assignments in case of sickness.
  2. Papers and other graded assignments are to be turned in on time.  Late papers will lose one letter grade (10 points) for each day late.  No excuses.  (Save your work and check your ink cartridges a few days in advance.  Don’t leave papers to the last minute.)
  3. An important element to the classroom is respect.  Students must show respect for their peers, all their teachers/faculty members and themselves.
  4. Students who are guilty of academic dishonesty or cheating will receive a zero for the assignment and will be reported to the administration.
  5. If you are absent the day of a quiz or test it is your responsibility to schedule a makeup test.  All tests must be made up within five school days of the original test date or they will be counted as a zero.
  6. Students receiving detentions will be required to arrive promptly following school.  I will assign detentions and work/sports/activity schedules will not be considered with scheduling.   If a student skips a detention for any reason their name will be given to the office.
  7. Seating will be assigned.  Students are to remain in their seats unless otherwise specified.
  8. Students will be assigned laptop computers from the mobile lab.  Everyone must show care for the laptops.  Students must use their assigned computer and will be disciplined for using any laptop computer to which they are not assigned or for misuse/destruction.  All students are encouraged to use a portable USB drive to save work.
  9. Students must remain quiet during announcements.  Often announcements concern you and your fellow classmates.  There is no loudspeaker in the room and it is often difficult to hear them from the hallway speaker.
  10. No food, drink, candy, gum, etc. will be consumed in class.
  11. No whining.  You are young adults and may inquire or speak with me concerning matters.  Any whining or complaining will be disregarded.
  12. Any other classroom or school matter not covered within this may be covered within the student handbook.  It is each student’s responsibility to read the handbook so they may understand the policies.

This paper must be signed and returned by 9/8/06 or will be counted as a homework zero
