Sutton Memorial High School Mission Statement: At Sutton Memorial High School, we are committed to
providing a foundation on which all students have the opportunity to pursue
academic excellence and personal development in a safe, supportive, and challenging
learning environment.
Description of the Course: This course will focus on the five chronologically
based units starting with the 1930’s and the Great Depression and ending with
the present day U.S. Students will explore the causes and effects, the social,
political, and economic impact these events had, they will be able to analyze
primary sources for each event, and they will be able to express their own
ideas about the subject matter both orally and through writing.
Textbook: American
Odyssey, The United States in the 20th
Century (Book must have a cover on by Wednesday)
Materials:-A
three ring binder (the holes on the rings should at least be 2” inches)
-Lined paper
to go in the binder
- One
subject notebook with holes in it that will be used as a writing portfolio.

analyze all the major events learned in the course.

encounter throughout the year.

4. Write narrative, argumentative, and exposition essays
on a given or a self chosen topics.
5. Use technology as a tool for research and other
assigned tasks.

Behavior expectations can be found in the 2006-2007 SHS Student Handbook
Grading: 35% Homework- There will be 10 or more homework assignments per
quarter, which will be graded with either a V+ (complete and accurate), V
(mostly or somewhat complete and/or accurate), V- (less than half complete
and/or accurate), 50 (quarter complete and/ or accurate), I (incomplete can be
made up for full credit with proof of absence), 0 (cannot be made up)*.
*Each student has one free
homework that he/she can make up per quarter.
30% Quizzes-
There will be five or more quizzes during each quarter. Students will be
quizzed on material that we have gone over in class and/or reading assignments.
35% Tests- There
will be three or more test grades per quarter. Tests can be essays,
standardized test, and projects.
