 Course Description: Health is the state of well being in which all the components of health (physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental) are in balance. The course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore and relate the various aspects of health. The first focus of the course will be to give students an understanding of the human body, the various systems, and their interdependence. The second focus will allow students the opportunity to explore and relate the various aspects of health. This information will identify risk factors allowing them to make informed decisions. The skills from this course will help students work toward improving their health and well being of themselves, their families, their friends, and society. This course is aligned with MCAS standards and Massachusetts Health and Biology Frameworks.

                  Modern Biology. Austin: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1993.

Content: The following topics will be discussed in this class: Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, Growth and Development, Physical Activity and Fitness, Nutrition, Reproduction and Sexuality, Mental Health, Family Life, Interpersonal Relationships, Disease Prevention and Control, Safety and Injury Prevention, Substance Use/Abuse, Violence Prevention, Consumer Health and Resource Management, and Community and Public Health.

 Grading: Quarter Grades will be calculated using the following distribution.

 All make-ups will be expected within one week of return to class.
