The Massachusetts Social Studies Standards:

Economic Growth in the North and South, 1800-1860

USI.27 Explain the importance of the Transportation Revolution of the 19 th century (the building of canals, roads, bridges, turnpikes, steamboats, and railroads), including the stimulus it provided to the growth of a market economy. (H, E)

USI.28 Explain the emergence and impact of the textile industry in New England and industrial growth generally throughout antebellum America. (H, E)

USI.29 Describe the rapid growth of slavery in the South after 1800 and analyze slave life and resistance on plantations and farms across the South, as well as the impact of the cotton gin on the economics of slavery and Southern agriculture. (H)

Social, Political, and Religious Change, 1800-1860

USI.31 Describe the formation of the abolitionist movement, the roles of various abolitionists, and the response of southerners and northerners to abolitionism. (H)

The Massachusetts English / Language Arts Curriculum Frameworks:

Standard 8: Understanding a Text ~ Students will identify the basic facts and main ideas in a text and use them as the basis for interpretation.

Standard 9: Making Connections ~ Students will deepen their understanding of a literary or non-literary work by relating it to its contemporary context or historical background.

Standard 11: Theme ~ Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of theme in a literary work and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.

Standard 13: Nonfiction ~ Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the purposes, structure, and elements of nonfiction or informational materials and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.

Standard 14: Poetry ~ Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the themes, structure, and elements of poetry and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.

Standard 15: Style and Language ~ Students will identify and analyze how an author’s words appeal to the senses, create imagery, suggest mood, and set tone, and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.

Standard 19: Writing ~ Students will write with a clear focus, coherent organization, and sufficient detail.

Standard 20: Consideration of Audience and Purpose ~ Students will write for different audiences and purposes.

Standard 21: Revising ~ Students will demonstrate improvement in organization, content, paragraph development, level of detail, style, tone, and word choice (diction) in their compositions after revising them.

Standard 22: Standard English Conventions ~ Students will use knowledge of standard English conventions in their writing, revising, and editing.

Standard 23: Organizing Ideasin Writing ~ Students will organize ideas in writing in a way that makes sense for their purpose.

Standard 24: Research ~ Students will gather information from a variety of sources, analyze and evaluate the quality of the information they obtain, and use it to answer their own questions.

The Massachusetts Instructional Technology Standards :

Standard 1~ Basic Operations and Productivity Tools (Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers and applications, as well as an understanding of the concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity)

1.21 Demonstrate use of intermediate features in word processing applications (e.g., tabs, indents, line spacing, headers and footers, end notes, bullet and numbering, tables, symbols/special characters).

1.55 Create, send, receive, and reply to email messages.

1.61 Use a variety of technology tools (e.g., dictionary, thesaurus, grammar-checker, calculator) to maximize the accuracy of technology-produced products.

1.62 Demonstrate knowledge of strategies used by media (e.g., games, video, radio/TV broadcasts, web sites) to entertain and influence people.

Standard 2. Ethics, Society, and Safety (Demonstrate the responsible use of technology and an understanding of ethics and safety issues in using electronic media at home in school, and in society)

2.15 Demonstrate the appropriate use of copyrighted materials in word processing documents created for class assignments.

2.16 Explain legal and ethical guidelines for the use of personal and copyrighted media (i.e. images, music, video, text) in multimedia projects and discuss consequences of misuse.

2.17 Evaluate information from various online resources for accuracy, bias, appropriateness, and comprehensiveness.

2.34 Use email functions and features including replying, forwarding, attachments, subject lines, signature, and address book. (Use of e-mail is at district discretion and may be a class-wide activity if students do not have individual accounts.)

2.36 Validate a web site for authenticity (i.e. find site sponsor, author, and date the site was last updated).

Standard 3 ~ Research, Problem Solving, and Communications ( Demonstrate an ability to use technology for research, problem solving, and communication)

3.31 Use a variety of telecommunication tools (e.g., e-mail, discussion groups, web pages, blogs, videoconferences, web conferences) synchronously and/or asynchronously to collaborate and communicate with peers, experts, and other audiences.
