POSITION TITLE: High School Principal
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate Administrator’s License as
outlined by the Massachusetts Department of Education and three to five year experience as a building administrator

GENERAL STATEMENT:
The senior high school principal is directly responsible to the Superintendent of Schools for administering the high school system. This responsibility shall include the administration, the instructional programs, the extra curricular programs, and community relations.
The principal must be able to exercise a high degree of initiative and professional independent judgment in accomplishing the aims of education and in carrying out the policies adopted by the Sutton School Committee, and the directives issued from the office of the Superintendent. Skill in delegation of authority is essential

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Instruction
1. As the top administrator of the high school, the principal shall carry out all directives and comply with all policies and administrative regulations adopted by the School Committee.
2. The principal is expected to make recommendations for retention and release of teachers for the improvement of the school system. She/He shall make recommendations concerning the hiring of her/his new staff.
3. The principal shall be responsible and supervise the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum content through a participative system involving teachers, students, and any others who may be able to help improve the system.
4. The principal is expected to participate in the study of administrative and educational problems from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
5. The principal is expected, in a cooperative and efficient manner, to fulfill all requests for various types of reports relating to such matters as attendance, enrollment, finances, Massachusetts Department of Education, Sutton School Committee, or central office administration.
6. It is the responsibility of the principal to prepare the preliminary general budget for her/his school. The principal shall also be held responsible for the supervision of the expenditures within her/his budget to assure the District of prudent management of funds.
Staff
1.
The principal shall provide for the most effective utilization
of the certified and classified staff through appropriate assignment to a
specific position, grade, or subject.

The principal shall conduct effective orientation activities
for all new staff members.
3.
The principal is expected to promote an environment of harmony
and cooperativeness whereby the staff members can effectively work and obtain
personal satisfaction in their jobs.

The principal shall develop a climate for participative
involvement of staff in curriculum analysis on a regularly scheduled basis.

As the instructional leader, the principal shall encourage
professional study on the part of the certified staff. She/He shall also
encourage their participation in the development and execution of school
procedures and policies. The principal shall be available, willing, and
interested in assisting the teachers to improve their teaching techniques in
the classroom; this may be accomplished through direct assistance or through a
referral system.

The principal is directly responsible for the management of
the internal office staff and the operation of such office. She/He is also
charged with the responsibility of supervision of the supporting services.

The principal is expected to conduct an effective supervisory
program of all personnel. Non-tenured teachers shall be frequently visited and
counseled for improved instructional practices. Tenured teachers shall be
visited with continued emphasis on growth and improvement.
Student Body
1. The principal is expected to develop an effective rapport with the student body, yet maintain pupil order and discipline.
2. The principal shall be responsible for the development and the supervision of system for assisting students with personal problems, curriculum selection by students, and assistance of post-high school plans of the students.
3. The principal shall be expected to be responsible for providing adequate services to students in the areas of health, testing, and safety.
4. The principal shall encourage the involvement of students in the operations of the school where matters are of direct relationship to students. The principal shall be responsible for developing the specific avenues by which this involvement can be utilized to the maximum benefit of the school system.
Community
1. The principal is expected to work actively with parent-teacher organizations and other community groups dedicated to the improvement of the educational system.
2. The principal shall encourage the appropriate use of school facilities by citizens of the community.
3. It is expected that the principal represent the school system and/or school district in professional and community groups.
