POSITION TITLE: School Nurse
REPORTS TO: Principal
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To conduct a health services program for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of students and school personnel in accordance with federal, state, and local law and district policies and procedures.
ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Conducts medical case findings, screening, and referral activities related to health defects of selected students.
2. Refers parents of pupils needing medical care or welfare assistance to appropriate private or community resources.
3. Conducts a program to control communicable diseases in the school and community.
4. Serves as a health education resource person to staff and students.
5. Provides health-counseling services for parents and school personnel.
6. Assists in identification of safety and health hazards on school sites.
7. Maintains a health record for each student.
8. Informs teachers of physical or health liabilities of students.
9. Provides emergency nursing service for sick or injured students at school.
10. Notifies parents of students about illnesses, physical defects, and potential health problems and provides health counseling directed toward pursuit of appropriate action.
11. Supervises assigned clerical personnel and student helpers.
12. Serves as faculty member in the total school program.
13. Assumes the responsibility for screen procedures such as hearing screening and scoliosis.
14. Makes up and distributes first-aid kits to classrooms.
15. Assists medical personnel in immunization programs conducted at the schools.
16. Prepares and distributes health topic bulletins to students, staff members, and parents.
17. Confers with family medical advisors as indicated.
18. Serves as a member of the site level school appraisal team.
19. Prepares mandated health and developmental workups and updates on all special education students.
20. Provides appropriate follow-through with students, parents, and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid School Nurse License or equivalent.
