GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Responsible for the development of criteria and procedures that can readily and effectively be used to identify students with or with the potential for special needs. Upon diagnostically identifying such students, to provide in conjunction with the classroom teacher such remedial intervention as may be necessary to overcome the student’s difficulties. Assist staff in understanding the special education state and federal regulations through planning, developing, and offering in-service courses and/or workshops. Responsible for preparing the preliminary budget for the Special Education Department in the school system. The special education director shall also be held responsible for the supervision of the expenditures within her/his budget to assure the District of prudent management of funds including planning and overseeing transportation.

 

JOB GOAL:  To provide special needs students with instructional services and assist teachers in providing the appropriate instruction and learning environment that will enable each student in the District to master the basic skills appropriate to age, level, and individual capacity.

 

 

 

 

 


EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

 

 

  1. Oversees the evaluation process of all pupils who are referred as possibly having a potential learning difficulty.
  2. Works with the superintendent in developing the annual special education budget and coordinates all fiscal responsibilities associated with the special education department
  3. Ensures compliance with all state and federal regulations.
  4. Works as an integral member of the administrative team.
  5. Confers with classroom teachers to discuss plans and decisions regarding the appropriate educational program for students with special needs.
  6. Oversees the preparation of written reports regarding the nature of the problems, pertinent information, test results, conclusions, and specific recommendations as needed.
  7. Acts as a resource person for in-service training of teachers.
  8. Familiarizes school personnel with existing Individual Educational Plans (I.E.P.’s) and new programs being developed to improve regular classroom instruction for high risk students.
  9. Confers with parents as necessary.
  10. Advance professional growth by attending and participating in local and state professional meetings.
  11. Encourages community interest in and support for the special education services provided by Sutton Schools.
  12. Encourages reorganization of personnel, facilities, and materials for children with special needs as necessary.
  13. Oversees the maintenance, and monitors case records of pupils and their I.E.P.’s.
  14. Oversees the preparation and filing of all required reports of the Massachusetts Department of Education and prepares the end-of-year documentation as required.
  15. Assumes such other tasks as may be assigned by the superintendent.
  16. Hires and evaluates instructional staff in conjunction with buildings principals.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CAPACITIES

 

Possess a thorough working knowledge of the complexities and nature of learning disabilities. Possess the ability to work cooperatively with all personnel of the school for the early identification and remediation of learning disabilities. Maintains currency with applicable state and federal laws and regulations related to special and regular education.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Masters’ degree from an accredited institution with at least ten graduate level courses in the psychology of learning, diagnosis and correction of learning difficulties, development, evaluation, and appraisals of learning disability programs and clinical or laboratory practicum in learning disability.
  2. Hold a valid certificate in Administrator of Special Education.
  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Sutton School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.
