Sutton Memorial High School

Sutton, Massachusetts

By-Laws

(Revised 2007)

Article I—Membership

The Donald G. Schwab Chapter of the National Honor Society recognizes members of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes who have demonstrated the qualities of scholarship, good character, leadership ability, and service to both the school and the community.

Unless specifically stated in these by-laws, the Donald G. Schwab Chapter follows the Constitution of the National Honor Society (revised in 2007).

Article II—Selection of Members

Selection into the National Honor Society is a privilege, not a right. This honor, recognized throughout the nation, is both the public recognition of accomplishment and the private commitment to continued excellence on the part of the new members.

  1. In order to be eligible for consideration, candidates must be in their sophomore, junior, or senior year, and have attained a cumulative grade point average of at least 90.0 % (amended June 2007). Any potential inductee must have attended Sutton Memorial High School for at least one semester. Students are not eligible until they have successfully completed the first two grading terms of their sophomore year.
  2. Qualified candidates will be notified by letter and informed that for further consideration for selection to the chapter they may complete the Student Profile Portfolio, outlining their accomplishments in the areas of service and leadership.
  3. A letter of recommendation attesting to the candidate’s character from an adult outside of the school setting must be submitted with the Student Profile Portfolio.
  4. Because additional faculty input is beneficial, all faculty members are given the opportunity to comment on the service, leadership, and character of the candidates directly to the chapter advisor prior to the selection meeting. The chapter advisor will present this information to the Faculty Council at the selection meeting. The actual selections will be made by the five (5) appointed members of the Faculty Council.
  5. Students who have been inducted into a chapter of the National Honor Society in another school may transfer their membership to this chapter upon receipt of a letter from the principal or chapter advisor of the school where the student was inducted.
  6. It shall be the responsibility of the candidate to acquire, complete, and return the Student Profile Portfolio, including the letter of character. The form and other pertinent information must be completed and returned to the chapter advisor at the specified date following the candidate’s notification of eligibility.
  7. After approval by the Faculty Council, a formal notification is sent to all selected candidates and their parents informing them of their selection and the time and place of the induction ceremony. All candidates must attend the formal ceremony in order to become members of the National Honor Society.

Article III—Non-selection

Potential candidates not selected for membership may appeal the decision of the Faculty Council as outlined in the Constitution of the National Honor Society (see Article V Section 4). Those students not selected will be given a letter stating the reason(s) for non-selection. Those students not selected are eligible to re-apply the following school year provided they maintain the required cumulative grade point average (see Article II #1 of By-Laws).
