The mission of Sutton High School is to support and
encourage academic excellence.
This year the High
Honors Recognition Dinner was initiated to celebrate
that excellence for scholars and their parents.
Students who achieved high honors status for three of
the four terms last year were eligible for this special
recognition.
The genesis of this idea began a number of years ago in a
neighboring school district, and as both a high school
principal and school superintendent I witnessed the positive
results of the event and wanted to begin such a tradition in
Sutton.
To coordinate such an event required volunteers as well as
financial support. While
I knew that Mr. Goyette was a successful assistant principal,
I was unaware of his culinary talents.
He reassured me frequently that he could prepare and
serve dinner for the over 100 students and parents in
attendance. Teachers
were needed to serve as waitstaff for the dinner, and I was
overwhelmed with the number who volunteered.
In fact, due to Chef Goyette’s restrictions, only
twenty could participate, but many more indicated an interest
in assisting. It
was their way to recognize the honorees for their achievements
and I am sure the students were surprised but impressed to see
their teachers in this role.

Invited guests included members of the school committee
and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Cecilia DiBella.
Financial support was solicited from area businesses
and their contributions assisted in a variety of ways and were
most appreciated. In
addition, the high school PTO provided desserts and Mark
Bailey and his art students designed and created the
decorations. During
the evening, teacher Sandy Kerr offered musical interludes on
the piano.
As part of the program, each student was recognized
individually and received a certificate of excellence.
A Sutton resident was invited as the guest speaker.
This year we were pleased to have State Representative
Jennifer Callahan who has achieved success in both the medical
and political fields. She
congratulated the honorees and related the importance of
education that was instilled by her own family and how her
diverse educational background has enabled her to solve
contemporary problems.
It is my intention that this new tradition becomes a
permanent part of the culture at Sutton High School.
I congratulate the 2006-2007 High Honor students.
Special thanks to the staff of volunteers who
contributed to a very successful evening.
A list of high honor students, volunteer staff and
business supporters can be found on page 3 of Reflections.
